Plenty of food tech startups relate to these people (probably because they have also experienced the same pain). This has inspired them to work hard to create alternative proteins AKA meatless meats. Of course – taste, presentation, and texture all determine what is a successful meatless meat.
Have They Really Created Vegan Chicken Fat?
Tastilux is the latest invention of the Aussie company Nourish Ingredients. This artificial animal fat is made out of fungi that have been grown on Australian soil. Interestingly enough, some baby formulas have been made from the exact same fungi.
How do they make it? Basically, they use a technique known as “precision fermentation.” It’s also a technique used to brew beer. Once the “fake fat” is produced, it is added to plant-based foods to make their flavor even “meatier” than before.
It Might End Up in Every Store
While it’s unclear when Tastilux will become a household name – if ever, the signs are promising, especially since it was unveiled at SXSW Sydney.
In fact, at the event, the CEO of Nourish Ingredients, James Petrie, told an attendee about when his son tasted Tastilux for the very first time. “He tasted it and he looked really shocked,” he recalled. “He said, ‘Oh, that’s really good … You could sell that!’”
And surely enough, Nourish Ingredients is on the verge of bringing vegan/vegetarian meat fat to the masses, paving the way for a much more authentic experience.
