It seems like drones are everywhere these days. What started off as raw prototypes and toy-like devices have evolved into extremely sophisticated aerial vehicles that are seemingly used for all kinds of purposes. Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting (and important) facts about drones.

What are Drones?
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), more commonly known as Drones, are aircraft without a human pilot. They can be operated by a person using a remote control or autonomously by a computer. Drones were initially used in military exercises; however, they now have many business and recreational uses as well.
They Were Used in Vietnam
During the Vietnam War, the US sent thousands of drones to conduct aerial scans of Vietnam; however, these were destroyed by enemy fire. Still, it was considered a win as no human lives were lost in the missions.
Drones Can Vary Drastically in Price and Size
Drones that are specified for military exercises can cost around 10 million dollars or more, depending on the size. Some drones can fit in a backpack, while others are as big as a full-sized plane with wingspans of more than 30 meters. Today, drones are available to the masses. Prices vary depending on the features and size of drones; palm-size commercial UAVs can cost you less than $100, while the more advanced ones can cost thousands of dollars.

They Are Used for Everything These Days
Government entities use drones for emergency situations, employing them in search and rescue operations, assessing critical situations, and disaster relief missions. Drones are also useful for mapping, conservation tasks, wildlife monitoring, pipeline construction, aerial photography, hunting support, and real estate photography.
The Best Drone Ever?
The Predator (MQ-1) drone is one of the best-known military drones. It was released in 1995 and since then has completed many missions, mostly in the Middle East. On March 9, 2018, the US Air Force officially retired the Predator from operational service.
