Dessert can make or break a meal. Whether you’re just having a meal with your family, or entertaining a big party, dessert is on everyone’s minds. But chocolate is overdone (there, we said it!), and people want something more refreshing. Here are some delicious fruity alternatives.
Lemon Bars
These are a classic, and chances are that your mom or grandma already has a recipe for you. These zesty treats are the perfect blend of sweet and sour, and everyone will love them.
The details will differ depending on the recipe, but, in essence, it is lemon custard over a shortbread cookie, topped with some icing sugar. It’s simple, though offers a great mix of textures, and a big burst of flavor.
Apple Dumplings
You may not be familiar with these, but apple dumplings go all the way back to the 1700s. To achieve this delicious dessert, you’ll have to peel, core, and slice a whole apple into thin discs, keeping the original shape of the apple. Then, fill the empty core with cinnamon, butter, and sugar. From there, you wrap the apple in a pastry sheet, coat (read: drench) it in sugar syrup, and bake it in the oven. You won’t regret this one.
Raspberry Sorbet
Sorbets are easy to make at home and give you license to make any frosty flavor your heart desires. For this summer sensation, you just need lemon juice, sugar, and frozen raspberries. The thing is, you’ll also need an ice cream maker.
There are, technically, other ways to make homemade sorbets, but honestly? Take it from us, a home ice cream maker is a worthwhile investment that actually won’t burn a big hole in your pockets.
Poached Pears
Now this one is fancy. This is the kind of dessert you make when you’re hosting your boss and their spouse for dinner. Or if you’re meeting your future in-laws for the first time. Typically, poached pears are made by cooking peeled pears in a concoction of warm red wine, cinnamon, and orange juice. The juicy pear soaks up all that rich sauce and you get a decadent fruity treat.
