First, Zippers
When browsing through backpacks, whether online or at the camping gear store, look for one with two zippers per compartment. This feature will allow you to lock the two zippers together, adding an extra layer of security. If you purchase a lock for that purpose, make sure to get one that is TSA-friendly. They will have a special release valve that allows TSA to easily open the bag when checking it in without damaging the bag or having to bring out any scary metal cutters.
Then, Material
Look for a backpack that is made from thick yet lightweight and water-resistant material. Water resistance is especially important if you plan on hiking or camping. If you can’t get fully water-resistant material, try to at least go for something that dries easily. This is crucial, especially if you’re traveling somewhere where rain is common, like the tropics or a wintery destination.
After That, Compartments
Multiple compartments are a backpacker’s friend. They are the element that will help you stay organized without having to pull everything out when you need a specific item. You don’t want to end up with a backpack-sized tote bag. Another advantage of multiple compartments is that they will allow you to separate clean from used clothing while protecting your valuables in the best-concealed pocket.

On to Padding
Try the backpack on at the store and check if it has padding in the shoulder straps. While you’re at it, check for a contoured and padded back and hip belt. This padding is not just for show. It’s there to help you put less pressure on your back shoulders as you wander through whatever jungle you are planning to explore.
And Finally, Frame
Take a look at the internal frame of the backpack. The internal frame should be well stitched into the structure of the bag and keep it steady and safe. If your backpack has a good internal frame plus the other features mentioned, you should be good to embark on that journey of yours!
