We all dream of having a child mastering the cello or being the star of the city’s orchestra. However, things don’t always work out the way we plan. Not all children have a desire to play a musical instrument; however, when they do show interest, how do we know which one is best for them? Here are a few tips to help you recognize your child’s interests, fit desires with expectations, and ensure your child’s musical experience is as enjoyable and enriching as possible.

Identify Their Curiosity
When your child shows interest in music, try to understand what exactly stimulates him. Is it the sound of the piano? Is it the improvisation of the saxophone, or is it the rock and roll characteristics of the electric guitar? Try to identify their natural attraction and lead them securely down their musical path.
Size and Age
You must consider the size and age of your child. There is no point in introducing a four-year-old child to a gigantic cello when you know there is no way the relationship between the two is going to work. There are plenty of age-appropriate options awaiting to be discovered, and by choosing the right instrument adapted to the child’s physical dimensions, your child will be confident enough to take the ride and experiment.

Don’t Buy
Children change their minds all the time. On Monday, they are huge soccer fans; on Wednesday, they want to be professional swimmers; on Friday, they are cheerleader pros; and on Sunday, they don’t want to do anything. This goes for musical instruments, too. Don’t invest your annual savings in buying a brand-new guitar; think about renting one instead, at least for the first few months. There is a high possibility that by the time you get home with it, your child has already changed their mind.
Classes
Introduce your child to the magic of making music. After two or three lessons, you will know if they are up to it and if they are willing to dedicate their time. They don’t have to go to one specific instrument lesson. Let them explore a variety so they can understand what each one means and what it would require from them. Your child will be exposed to the wonderful world of music, and you will be the proud mum you always wanted to be.

Get Involved
If you show your kid how supportive you can be concerning music lessons, your child will also be supportive of the idea, too. They will know and feel that there is someone behind them for support and be there if they need you. Many children are afraid of making mistakes, and by assuring them that it’s okay to make them and that the more they practice, the better they will become, your child will go on a beautiful adventure, with thanks to your ongoing support.
