Forget the stereotypical hula skirts and luaus, the Island of Hawaii has so much more to offer. If you know the right places to go, there aren’t as many tourists as you’d expect, and there are so many things to do you’ll forget about your phone.
Accommodation
Before any adventure, first, you need to secure accommodation, and there is no better place than the Kulaniapia Falls Inn. The hotel features a stunning 120-foot waterfall from which guests can climb and rappel. You will be treated to views that will blow your mind.

Take a walk into the clouds
If the waterfall isn’t high enough, then head over to Hawaii Forest and Trails, a nature adventure group that leads expeditions to the summit of Mauna Kea Volcano. Standing at 13,000 feet above sea level, guests can catch the majestic sunrise above the clouds. Be aware that the climb will take you 9,000 feet above sea level into cold temperatures which can be quite a challenge, so make sure to wear layers of thick clothing and cozy socks. The view of the sunrise is so breathtaking it’s more than worth the effort.

For enthusiastic hikers
If you enjoy being close to lava and want an alternative to climbing, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers a lava expedition led by KapohoKine Adventures. They have their own certified guides for a four-mile hike to Kilauea Volcano where you can spot lava outbreaks and flows. Seeing the power of such a natural force in front of your mortal eyes is truly exciting.

Underwater adventures
Volcanoes aren’t the only adventures awaiting you on the island of Hawaii. Ocean lovers should make it a point to visit Alaka’i Nalu for a truly unique snorkeling experience. You can also visit King’s Pond if you’d like an underwater adventure away from the ocean.
