Going back to sewing may seem irrelevant for today, or it might even feel like going back in time. However, sewing can be therapeutic, creative, and can also save you a lot of money down the line. Most of us might have witnessed our grandmothers sew here and there; however, nowadays, there is no one to teach us the basics. Let’s bring back to life the art of putting two fabrics together and creating material magic.

Clean Your Sewing Machine
If you have an old sewing machine collecting dust in your attic, it is time to get out and give it a good clean. Alternatively, sewing machines are still available, and there are many more options than our grandmothers had. Whatever your option is, get to learn the many features your machine has, and you will become a sewing expert within no time.
Start Small
Before you start making long and beautiful skirts for yourself and your daughter’s friends, start with something modest and not too complicated. Choose something you know you will be able to accomplish. We don’t want to get you frustrated before you even start. A tote bag is always a great way to start; a colorful new cotton case could be wonderful, and who knows? Maybe it will kick off a brand new homemade living room textile collection.

Take Lessons
If you feel a little rusty and things are not going exactly as planned, do not be embarrassed to take some lessons. There are numerous online courses and tutorials that will help you get started and teach you great technics. There are local sewing clubs you could join (don’t worry, not everyone there is over 60). Once your confidence is boosted, we guarantee you will find yourself buying less and less and sewing more and more.
Spare The Time
If you truly set your heart to this and decide that you want to invest in sewing, you will have to make the time and make the space. By having a dedicated tutor or a specific room where no one interferes, your sewing sessions will become more significant. In addition, pick a day and time to commit to yourself. It can be in the afternoon or in the morning over the weekend. Whatever you decide, it must be defined, as we all know how these things end up.

Don’t Give Up
Getting into sewing is not just about creating new clothes and decorating your home with homemade textiles. It is, first and foremost, creating time for yourself. It is about teaching others around you the value of money, the value of self-expression, and an opportunity to refresh your skills and do what you love (or what you will learn to love because once you get going, and as soon as you get the hang of it, you won’t be able to stop).
