In Italy, there are many ways to maximize your time when it comes to sightseeing. We have picked out the very realistic route of enjoying the city of Naples, while also getting to experience the ruins of Pompeii, and more, in just two and a half days.
Day 1 – Naples
Your base for the trip – there’s no city quite like Naples. From the narrow high street of La Tribunali to the plethora of pizzerias and delicatessens, Naples is full of character and life, waiting to be explored.
This city is best to just wander around and explore without any real aim. With one exception – the pizza. Napolitano pizza is no joke. It is so simple in its execution and must take priority when in this city.
Da Michele Pizzeria is ideal for the pizza purists out there. The menu’s so small. The only options (at least, when we were last there) are margarita or marinara. And they only have beer or water to drink (maybe some sodas).
With the perfect mix of tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, basil, and warm hospitality, you will not be disappointed by this delightful Neopolitan welcome.
Day 2 – Pompeii
While Naples was about experiencing the people of today, Day 2 is dedicated to the people of the past. Sadly, the ancient city of Pompeii’s residents lost their lives under tragic circumstances. The nearby volcano, Mount Vesuvius, erupted and destroyed the entire city and everyone who lived there.
Today, the ruins of Pompeii are an important historical and archeological site and have attracted millions of visitors over the years.
You can easily take the train from Naples to Pompeii, which takes just over half an hour. But make sure to get an early train to avoid rush hour and to give yourself as much time as possible.
We recommend giving yourself at least 3-4 hours to pay this UNESCO World Heritage Site enough time and attention.
Next Stop – Vesuvius
Once your time at Pompeii is up, go to the nearby bus station and board your pre-booked bus. You could walk all the way, but an organized bus will take you about three-quarters up Mount Vesuvius.
Upon arrival, you can still enjoy a respectable hike with the other passengers to the peak of the dormant volcano. The sites from the top are quite remarkable, both of the vast landscapes below and the crater inside.
Your return to Naples should be pretty straightforward. During that evening, why not try out one of the city’s local delights – the Pizza Fritta? This fried, inverted pizza is available with all kinds of toppings, including anchovies, fresh tomatoes, and salami.
