Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania are working to create a toothbrush that could completely change the way we brush. Hyun (Michael) Koo and Ed Steager are the masterminds behind this project.
They believe that this kind of solution would be ideal, not just for those of us who struggle to find the strength to brush our teeth at the end of a busy day. It could also prove to be beneficial for people with illnesses preventing them from brushing, and those with disabilities.
How Exactly Would a Nanobrush Work?
In theory, the device wouldn’t even look much like a toothbrush. Instead, we’re talking about a small robot made up of nanoparticles. The person involved would apply two magnets to each end of their mouth. Then, the nanoparticles would form bristles to brush your teeth for you.
While industry-standard electric toothbrushes are designed to do a good job of breaking up plaque, this device would take things to a whole new level. Not to mention the fact that the nanoparticles would create molecules designed to get rid of any remaining bacteria.
The Future of Hygiene
The nanobrush is still in its very early stages. With that said though, Koo and Steager are convinced that they’ll eventually make their dream come true. They believe it’s a healthier, cost-effective solution for toothbrushing. Of course, the device needs to be both safe and comfortable before it’s rolled out to the public. Mary Anne Melo, who researches dentistry for a living, likes the idea, in theory. While she can’t wait to brush her teeth with it, she thinks we’re still a good while away from its wide release.
