Birthday Confusion
Baseballer Babe Ruth’s original name was George Herman Ruth. When he was 7, he was sent to a Catholic Boys Reformatory School where every child was taught an industrial profession. In Ruth’s case, it was shirt-making.

Even though he was born on February 6th, 1895, he spent most of his life believing his birthday was on February 7th, 1984. He finally discovered his age in 1934 when he was applying for a passport to go to Japan.
Budding Career
With the encouragement of the staff, Ruth played baseball in school which would spark his talent. He was recruited to play in major league baseball when he was only 19. Some attribute his nickname, “Babe” to his young age at the time. Others say that his nickname was likely because of his lost demeanor when he initially joined the team, unsure of what to do with himself when he wasn’t playing baseball. He also had other names, like the Home Run King, and Bambino.
Legacy
Ruth’s career in major league baseball began with pitching. He was originally purchased by the Boston Red Sox from the Baltimore Orioles. His next team was the New York Highlanders (which then became the New York Yankees). The 1920s were the highlight of his career.

His participation helped the Yankees win 4 All Series games. By the 1930s, he was the highest-paid player in major league baseball. In the game prior to his retirement in 1935, he hit 3 home runs.
