What Are Armored Cars?
Basically, an armored car is a lightweight vehicle that is built specifically for search operations, internal security assignments, and other military-related missions. The main factors that contribute to their popularity in the military are their low production cost and how easy they are to maintain. Unlike tanks, armored cars are less dangerous, making them more suitable for internal security and diplomatic missions.
1899 – Simms’ Motor War Car
The first ever armored car, the Simms’ Motor War Car, was first designed by Frederick Richard Simms back in the late 1800s. A combination of a German-made motor and a unique chassis brought this vehicle to life in 1899. The prototype was finalized in 1902.
1972 – AAV-P7/A1
The AAV-P7/A1 is an amphibious armored vehicle that currently serves as a troop transporter for the United States Marine Corps. This amtrac (amphibious tractor) is designed to assist with amphibious operations and inland missions.
1983 – LAV-25
The LAV-25 is an eight-wheeled amphibious light armored vehicle used by the United States Marine Corps. The amphibious vehicle was built by General Dynamics Land Systems Canada (GDLSC) and developed using the concept of the AVGP Swiss MOWAG Piranha 6×6 armored vehicle.
1986 – M9 Armored Combat Earthmover (ACE)
The M9 Armored Combat Earthmover (ACE) is a tracked vehicle designed to give building support to front-line forces. In 1986, the United States Army finally deployed M9 ACEs to eliminate enemy obstacles, and repair combat roads, and perform maintenance on the battlefield.
