Technology has been knocking on our doors for years, and it has not passed over our fridge door either. Of all the fruits and vegetables we consume on a daily basis, the gorgeous red tomato has been through the most technically interfered changes, and as it turns out, the changes are not about to end soon. A lot of what you see in the tomatoes you eat, be it their size or shape, is all manmade.

Technology Treats
If in the past we would plant the seeds, water them every now and then, and let nature do its magic, well, today the tomatoes we eat get much more than a few drops of water and warm rays of sun. The soil the seeds are planted in can detect the moisture levels, assuring the beautiful red blubs are in perfect moisturized conditions. AI has introduced itself to our food, too, and it can monitor the amount of growing each tomato is supposed to do. The result? Tasty tomatoes, artificially made.
From Where to Your Table?
You can say goodbye to the ‘made in’ labels you see stuck all over your tomatoes. Soon, there will be no need to ruin the beautiful red coat your fruit is dressed in, and by scanning a simple QR code to find every product in the grocery store, you will be able to know the journey your tomato took before arriving on your plate. Today, the fruit or veg passport can be found on large containers, but pretty soon, the journey journal will be available to all. This way, you will be able to choose the tomato you prefer, be it lavish Italian Mediterranean or more local.

Bring The Farm Home
Although there is something heartwarming and captivating about going to an authentic farmers market and being able to smell and touch the products, the world is going in other directions, and soon enough, you will be able to walk down the market alleys from the comfort of your own home. Tomato drones will soon decorate the skies and deliver the best they have to offer right to your doorstep. It may sound bizarre and so unreal, however, this is becoming reality. Tomato drones are green; they reduce transportation vehicles on the roads and, by this, reduce the carbon levels that pollute our planet.
Where Are the Tomatoes Going?
The future guarantees new and exciting things, and this is accurate for tomatoes, too. Could you imagine a device of some sort being able to detect when a fruit or vegetable is ripe and perfect to be eaten? The day is not far from coming, and by the way things are going, the fruit and vegetables, and especially the tomatoes, will look better, be consumed at the perfect time, and maybe, just maybe, make us eat all of our five every day.

Tomato Mania
The great varieties of tomatoes we see in our supermarkets today are nothing compared to what the future is hiding. If there are four or five main varieties today, we are looking at tens of various juicy red fruits. Oh, and another thing, they are not all going to be red. The world has already introduced us to yellow, purple, and green tomatoes; what other shapes and shades are awaiting us around the corner?
