When we think about safari experiences, the thing that usually pops into our minds is the African savannah, the view that we see in “Lion King,” and Big Five sightings. The Big Five, for those of you who don’t know, are the five biggest wild animals in Africa: elephant, lion, rhino, leopard, and African buffalo, and travelers like to try to tick them all off their list when exploring the continent. However, did you know that safari experiences aren’t limited to Africa? Other places can also boast vast natural terrain where you can visit the local creatures in their natural habitat. Here are three such recommended safari experiences to try:
India: Ranthambore National Park
In the Indian state of Rajasthan lies the Ranthambore National Park. The place is home to great jungles all for you to (carefully and responsibly) explore. A tour of the national park will take you to see the ruins of Ranthambore Fort and other remains of centuries-old architecture, as well as, of course, pieces of raw nature, where you can spot a majestic Bengal tiger or two. Some of the other wild animals you may encounter on your safari trip include crocodiles, leopards, and unique birds you can’t find anywhere else.
Brazil: Pantanal
Seeing as Brazil is home to a large portion of the Amazon Rainforest and all of its biodiversity, it makes perfect sense for the country to offer local safari trips. The tropical weather creates natural conditions in which loads of animal species can thrive for our viewing pleasure. While some areas feature vegetation too dense to travel through, visiting the wetlands of the Pantanal region is sure to quench your safari-loving thirst. The water-rich terrain boasts marshes, lagoons, and rivers where you can find capybaras, jaguars, and giant otters, among others.
Bangladesh: Sundarbans
The Sundarbans of Bangladesh are home to the largest mangrove forest in the world, which means there is virtually no end to the flora and fauna you can find there. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, obviously. Do your research to find the best guided tour of the area as you don’t want to be by yourself in case you meet the local saltwater crocodiles or Bengal tigers. The way that water plays its role in this ecosystem is incredible and best viewed via boat tour.
